Our friendship began in (2nd) grade in Temecula, CA and was maintained throughout adolescence. We became best friends after high school and communicate through primarily photography, music, skateboarding and words sometimes. Photography peaked our interest when Westin owned a Canon AE1 and gifted it to Ethan in September of 2021 as an ode to Ethans’ labors in assisting the completion of a commission of 100 hand-made journals. At the time we could not comprehend how obsessed we would both be with the craft. There is no competition between us. Our process is collaborative: built on critique, experimentation, and pushing one another toward refinement. We strive to challenge the work: not one another.

Westin: I don’t remember exactly when the moment was but I was very young. My father pulled a box from underneath his bed that contained thousands of negatives and prints. My curiosity was sparked in regard to the sentimental nature of this box and what it contained. In the years following I began to shoot on whatever camera I could get my hands on. Somewhere in this period of time around the age of 16 I recall a promise made to self to have a camera on hand at all times. Since this promise has been made: A camera has been one of the most effective tools to create human connection.

Ethan: Throughout my life i have been consciously surrounded with intentional design and architecture: inspired by my parents. This intertwined with what I am surrounded by push me to shoot what I imagine. Every time I pick up my camera my goal is to capture this perspective. The past only exists in our memories: photography is the evidence. A desire to portray what is envisioned in mind through different mediums.

The name itcho traces back to our time as missionaries in Zimbabwe, where we both used the slang “itcho” in everyday conversation. When we returned home and began building a joint website: the name surfaced again.

Around that same time, we were listening to “I Tcho Tchass” by Akofa Akoussah.
